Our people are Dena’ina, a branch of the Athabascan Native American Group. Thousands of years ago, Athabascans migrated from interior Alaska throughout North America and as far south as Mexico. Our Kenaitze ancestors, nomadic hunters of the boreal forest, settled on the Kenai Peninsula along the banks of the Cook Inlet and its rivers.
Today, the Kenaitze Indian Tribe is federally recognized as a sovereign nation under the Indian Reorganization Act (IRA) of 1934. Our Tribal members number over 1,200, and live on the Kenai Peninsula, throughout Alaska and in the Lower 48.
